This beautiful cotton fabric is hand dyed by artisans from natural indigo plants using traditional methods that have been used by generations. 6 different shades are available.
No toxic materials are used during the dyeing process which is environment friendly.
Great for Sashiko stitching, patch work and making garments or household furnishings. Its beautiful indigo color is full, rich as well as lively that no modern industrial process can compare to.
All our Sashiko kits and some applique kits are made from this fabric. It delivers classic, elegant and close-to-heart look.
Since the fabric has gone through water several times and there is no stretching done by machine during dyeing process the fabric wouldn’t shrink. This gives you a gain of about 5% compared to the fabrics dyed or printed by machines.
Given that the fabric is dyed from natural plant by hand, it carries handcraft “marks” and characters. For example some of them may have tiny holes along the selvage for movement control during dyeing and there is also a subtle fragrance from plant dye carried by the fabric.
In addition the fabric does need some special care due to the natural dye. Without wash, tiny amount of excessive dye may transfer from the fabric to your hands after you work on it for a while. Hence washing before use is recommended. Please wash with similar colors with mild detergent and dry in a shade. You can find more detailed guidance on fabric care in Care Tips.
